Local Courses on Teaching in Higher Education
Graduate students and postdoctoral associates are able to enroll in these courses with instructor permission. Postdoctoral fellows may incur tuition when registering through the part-time study program. Course offerings in 2017-2018 include:
- ALS 6014: Theater Techniques for Enhancing Teaching and Public Speaking – Learn to use theater techniques to help enhance your classroom teaching and public speaking in both formal and informal environments.
- ALS 6015: The Practice of Teaching in Higher Education – Discover effective teaching and professional development skills to help prepare you for a higher education faculty position.
- ALS 6016: Teaching as Research in Higher Education – Learn about the scholarship of teaching and learning and teaching as research to design and complete your own original research project to inform teaching in your discipline.
Every semester, the CIRTL Network offers a variety of credit-optional, free online graduate courses that leverage the expertise and diversity of faculty from 40 universities. Recent offerings include:
- Basics of Online Learning and Teaching – Learn how to design and run an effective online course.
- Developing a Teaching Portfolio – Craft a teaching philosophy statement and document teaching experience and evidence of effectiveness.
- Diversity in the College Classroom – Become a better college instructor by considering the complex issues of diversity and how to address them effectively in your classroom practice.
Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)
These massive open online courses are designed to prepare aspiring faculty in STEM fields (natural and social sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics) to be more effective teachers. Course 1 was offered in Summer 2017 and Course 2 is being offered in Spring 2018.
- Course 1: An Introduction to Evidence-Based Undergraduate STEM Teaching – Learn about effective teaching strategies and the research that supports them, and apply your learning to the design of lessons and assignments for use in your future teaching or job application packages.
- Course 2: Advancing Learning through Evidence-Based STEM Teaching – Learn about Teaching as Research—the deliberate, systematic, and reflective use of research methods to develop and implement teaching practices that advance the learning experiences and outcomes of both students and teachers.
