""What is Teaching as Research (TAR)?

Teaching as Research, as defined by the national Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL), is the “deliberate, systematic, and reflective use of research methods… to develop and implement teaching practices that advance the learning experiences and outcomes of both students and teachers.”

The first annual Teaching as Research National Conference and Train the Trainer Pre-Conference Workshop at Cornell University brings together a community of leaders interested in working with students and faculty on their own campuses to develop research projects to inform and improve teaching and learning.

Since 2011, Cornell has run a Classroom Research and Teaching Symposium each spring where graduate students, postdocs, and faculty can present the results of their research into effective teaching practices. Starting in 2017, it is now a day-long conference that is open to attendance and presentation by individuals from other colleges and universities.

The Train-the-Trainer Pre-Conference Workshop immediately preceding the national conference is designed to guide new and seasoned faculty, professional development staff, and administrators in the development of a Teaching as Research (TAR) program tailored to their institution, and in best practices for preparing university faculty and graduate students to build TAR into their courses.

Overview of the Teaching as Research National Conference (June 6)

Attendees/presenters will have an opportunity to engage with colleagues on a variety of Teaching as Research topics presented as papers, posters and roundtable discussions. Conference panelists will share their experiences and lessons learned while designing TAR projects. At the conclusion of the conference, there will be opportunities to debrief the conference experience, and further refine plans for implementing a TAR program at the participant’s home institution. Faculty members and graduate students who have conducted research, or wish to do so, are encouraged to submit a proposal to present their findings at the conference.

To register to present, please see the Call for Papers/Proposals announcement. Direct questions about proposals to: cornellcte@cornell.edu

Who should attend the TAR National Conference?

Graduate students, postdocs, faculty and staff interested in learning more about Teaching as Research and attending research presentations and roundtable discussions on this topic. Those who have their own scholarship on teaching and learning to present in oral or poster form.

Overview of the Teaching as Research Train the Trainer Pre-Conference Workshop (June 4-5)

The ultimate goal of the workshop is to prepare participants to train others within their organizations to engage in teaching as research. You will leave with a plan for implementing a TAR program at your own institution. The workshop offers research-based and practical methods that can be easily adapted to a variety of higher education settings. Workshop facilitators include Kimberly S. Williams, the author of Doing Research to Improve Teaching and Learning: A Guide for University Faculty (Routledge).

This Train the Trainer Workshop will:

  • provide a foundation for developing your own local programming that supports faculty and graduate teaching assistant efforts to approach teaching as a research process
  • model best practices for engaging faculty and graduate students in discussions about Teaching as Research
  • offer strategies for organizing workshops, courses and symposia at your institution
  • supply ready-to-use materials and resources

Topics covered in the workshop:

  • rationale for and benefits of implementing Teaching as Research (TAR)
  • best practices for TAR
  • how to facilitate workshops, symposia, and classes on TAR
  • how to support faculty and graduate student Teaching as Research projects
  • common challenges and lessons learned
  • assessment methods for determining impact

Who should attend the TAR Train the Trainer Pre-Conference Workshop?

Administrators, faculty members, faculty developers, doctoral students and Masters in Education students interested in “Teaching as Research,” and other professional staff who lead or support professional development efforts for current and future faculty.

Why was the Teaching as Research Train the Trainer Pre-Conference Workshop created?

The Teaching as Research Train the Trainer Workshop and National Conference at Cornell was created for university administrators, faculty and graduate students to establish a network of practitioners who can serve as a resource for one another in the cutting-edge use of research to inform and improve teaching and learning in higher education. This event will encourage participants to incorporate research into their own practice to address the needs of all learners in university courses.
