Inclusive Teaching Series
The Inclusive Teaching Network, a working group of graduate students, postdocs, faculty and staff supported by the Center for Teaching Innovation and CIRTL at Cornell, strives to organize regular events on important topics relating to identity, diversity, and inclusion in college teaching, as well as an annual Inclusive Teaching Institute for Graduate Students and Postdocs. Do you ever find it challenging to connect with your students? With faculty? With colleagues? Have you ever encountered power dynamics in your field or at Cornell that you didn’t know how to address? Have you ever been in a situation where someone said something that made you uncomfortable and you didn’t know how to react? Do you ever want to talk about social identities like race, gender or sexual orientation, but you don’t know how? Do you want to connect with others who have the same questions?
The Intergroup Dialogue Project will be offering a 5-session course for Graduate and Professional Students and Postdoctoral Scholars that will be focusing on such questions in December 2018 and January 2019. If you are interested, please submit an application by Tuesday, November 20.

- Description: Hear graduate students in Indiana University / Purdue University Indianapolis’s Culturally Responsive Teaching learning community reflect on their experiences in the community, how those experiences have shaped their dispositions toward inclusive teaching and learning, and how inclusive teaching and learning can vary across disciplines.

The Intergroup Dialogue Project offered a 6-session course for Graduate and Professional Students and Postdoctoral Scholars in July 2018.
The Inclusive Teaching Institute for Graduate Students and Postdocs is a two-day retreat occurring Friday and Saturday, April 13-14, 2018. Participants will engage proactively in complex discussions about aspects of diversity at Cornell and beyond. Through readings, activities, and discussion, participants will expand their understanding of diversity and implement new ideas into their teaching practices and philosophies.

The Information Science Colloquium speaker for Wednesday, November 29, 2017, will be Juan Gilbert, the Andrew Banks Family Preeminence Endowed Professor and Chair of the Computer & Information Science & Engineering Department at the University of Florida, where he leads the Human-Experience Research Lab. His research areas include database, data science and informatics, human-centered computing, information security and machine learning.

As student demographics become more diverse, incidents of race and racism, privilege and power regularly impact undergraduates on our campuses. Without training, knowing how to address these inequities effectively can be uncomfortable and challenging.
This online workshop is designed to build your confidence in dealing with “hot moments” or “difficult discussions” in the classroom by giving you practice navigating these situations. The emphasis in the session is on deconstructing conversations and receiving feedback. Learn more
By participating in this workshop, participants will:
- explore the perspectives of underrepresented and minoritized students on our campuses,
- discuss a framework for addressing hot moments and difficult discussions in the classroom,
- practice what to say during these hot moments or difficult discussions.

Intergroup Dialogue Project: Summer 2017 Courses for Graduate Students & Postdocs
This peer-led course enables participants to reflect on their personal experiences related to such issues, but to also explore ways through which they can promote equity and inclusion in their academic spaces and circles.

Intergroup Dialogue Project: Special Sessions on Social Justice in the Sciences – Spring 2017
Especially in the sciences, graduate students rarely receive the training needed to address cultural and social differences they encounter during their careers. Learning how to communicate and work across difference is an essential skill in any career, and this program will allow graduate students to explore their social identities, to practice communication across difference, and to think together about authentic diversity in academia. This workshop series is complementary to the longer-format graduate course in IDP.

Regional Learning Community on Inclusive Teaching – Summer 2016
A 7-week program for current and future faculty at Cornell, Columbia, University of Rochester, and University at Buffalo. Through online group discussions and in-person workshops, participants will develop an understanding of the impact of identity, attitudes, and biases on student learning, and explore teaching strategies to create more inclusive learning environments.
